The Grounds General Hand is a member of the Building and Grounds Department. The role involves assisting in the day-to-day maintenance, renovation and upgrade to all school owned and leased (off-site spaces) sports surfaces, recreational lawns and garden beds. Duties will vary depending on seasonal requirements and sporting fixtures.

 

About the Role

In consultation with the Grounds Coordinator, the Grounds General hand will assist in the implementation of garden renovations and upgrades, including implementation of fertiliser, pesticide, and herbicide programmes for relevant areas.

Key Responsibilities include:

  • Assist in the maintenance of all school passive recreational lawns and associated irrigation systems.
  • Assist in the Management, maintenance, installation, and upgrading of irrigation systems (both automated and manual) as required.
  • Assist in the Maintenance of all school garden beds and trees to an exceptional standard.
  • Assist in the assessment and remediate plant health issues, including pest infestations, disease, and nutrient deficiencies.
  • Maintain school properties, grounds, workshops, vehicles, and property in a clean and tidy state.
  • Assist in the maintenance of all garden equipment and machinery.
  • Minor maintenance tasks and assist with venue/function setups.

 

About You

Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team environment is essential for this role. 

You will bring:

  • Preference to hold relevant horticultural qualifications or demonstrated equivalent experience in grounds, turf, or landscape maintenance.
  • Preference to have experience in maintaining lawns, garden beds, and plant health across large-scale or multi-site grounds.
  • Knowledge of seasonal horticultural practices, including pest, weed, and disease management.
  • An understanding in installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting manual and automated irrigation systems.
  • Competent in the safe application of fertilisers, herbicides, and pesticides.
  • Proficient in the operation, maintenance, and servicing of small engines, garden machinery, and power tools.
  • Ability to complete general building and property maintenance tasks, including basic repairs and upkeep.
